Creatures of myth and legend often live with some sort of truth around the world. There is no solid evidence for or against these cryptic beings “cryptids” but Earth still holds many mysteries people have yet to discover. No one knows what is beneath the surface of this otherwise dangerous planet. From the highest mountains to the depths of the oceans, humanity has been seeing these creatures since the dawn of time, but who are these mysterious beings?

The roof of the world holds a cryptic secret that shakes people down to their core. The Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas, often regarded as the Yeti. For centuries locals have been claiming sightings of this 7-12 foot tall creature with dark black or ginger hair. Different stories claim different things, to some, he is described as a savage ape-like beast with a lust for carnage, to others, he is regarded as a neutral beast, who will only harm if he is messed with. Sightings have occurred in the mountains of up to altitudes of 20,000 feet. Some truth lies within the myth, some sightings have been proven to be just the Tibetan blue bear standing on its hind legs. But that doesn’t mean this savage creature isn’t out there…

No legendary sea monster was as horrifying as the Kraken. According to stories, this huge, many armed cephalopod could reach as high as the top of a sailing ship’s main mast. There was never just one Kraken, sightings and stories of this legendary beast popped up all over the world. A Kraken would attack a ship by destroying the ship’s helm with its arms and the crew would drown or be eaten by the monster. The best evidence that has been collected is that this creature was based on something real, giant squids were known to wrestle with whales and would often mistake seafaring vessels as enemies to fight. Sadly giant squids aren’t miles long as some legends describe the sea monster. Of course, only 5% of the ocean has been discovered and mapped, and scientists are discovering weird and disturbing creatures, so perhaps this beast is out there just waiting for humanity to find it.

Next up is the Wendigo, a mythical man-eating monster or evil spirit born in the northern forests of the Atlantic Coast and Great Lakes Region of the United States and Canada. The Wendigo may appear as a monster with some characteristics of a human, or as a spirit who has possessed a human being and made them become monstrous. It is historically associated with murder, insatiable greed, and the cultural taboos against such behaviors. Wendigos are described as having skin stretched over an emaciated frame, sallow cheeks with yellowed fangs, and glowing eyes. It is reported to be over 12 feet tall and exclusively feeds off of human flesh. The way a Wendigo comes into existence is when, during times of famine and despair, the bitter cold comes in and destroys all the food and hope, leaving people to resort to awful means. In order to survive the harsh winters some resort to eating the flesh of their fellow man.  A Wendigo is created when someone becomes this desperate and savage. The man turned beast then spends the rest of its days hunting down people, friends, loved ones, just for another taste of the succulent flesh.

The Earth is full of mysterious and horrifying beings that may or may not roam the land and sea. Who knows what might be out there, waiting for humanity to find it.
