As it is winter, many people get stuck in a slump or depression. In New England, winters are long, cold, and harsh, causing people to stay indoors. This results in people becoming lazy and weighing down their mental state. The weather often has a big impact on how people feel and act. In warmer months, there is the option to go outside and walk, run, play sports, and soak up the sun, which results in people being more happy and productive.  During the winter, there is no outlet to use for exercising, unless of course you play a sport or can afford a gym membership. This results in people staying indoors due to the cold and snow, which causes them to feel bad about themselves. The average American gains five to ten pounds in the winter months due to the fact that they can’t go outside and exercise. Weight tends to be one of people’s biggest insecurities, and it can cause depression and self esteem issues. When people get into a slump it can be very difficult for them to get out, because winter is so long. Here are some ways to help you out of your winter slump:

Work harder to keep a healthy diet; be aware of healthy food choices, cut out junk food, and control the portions you eat. Give yourself one cheat day every week to indulge in your favorite candy or fatty food, so  you aren’t being deprived of something you love without it controlling you. Instead of going out to eat every week, stay in and make your own food. Home cooked meals are definitely better for you anyways. This will help you save money too.

Try hanging out with friends to enjoy some indoor activities, like playing games or watching movies. Take your friends out for bowling, or go for a calmer approach and visit the mall. There’s nothing better than some friendly competition.

Try to work out if possible. Exercising is always a helpful way to help you feel better. If you have the funds to go to a gym then do that, but many people do not have that option. You don’t need equipment to work out. Do some push-ups, sit-ups, jumping jacks…anything to get your body moving and that you can do in the comfort of your own home. Walking is a good way to keep weight off if you don’t like running or your body cannot handle anything more. If walking outside is not an option for you because of the temperature, use a treadmill instead. Ask around and see if a family member has a treadmill or something of that nature.

Being stuck in seasonal depression can be extremely tough, but there is always a way to dig yourself out of that hole. Hopefully these tips will help you out of your slump and then maybe you can use them to help someone else.
