On January 25, 2019, a Brazilian dam collapsed and 12 million cubic metres of toxic sludge was released into the surrounding towns. The area affected was equivalent to 100 football fields and some homes are buried in 49 feet of the toxic sludge, with many people believed to be buried with it. The latest death toll is 121 with an outstanding 226 that are missing, and the numbers are still rising.  Many people are wondering how this sort of thing happens without anyone else realizing, and there are some answers.

The name of the company that owns the dam is Vale. Many residents were suspicious of the collapse and they had many questions.  How did no one know what was going to happen? Did the company not check everything regularly and make sure that everything was working? Did this happen on purpose?

Incidentally this has been the second incident with one of Vale’s mines in the past three years. The other happening only 74 miles away from this one and killing 19 people in 2015. Many are wondering if the company is trying to destroy itself because they were in debt, or if they just wanted to kill many people; but that theory doesn’t make sense because the dam provided work for many people. Younger kids in the area were looking forward to working there when they were older, so the company most likely wouldn’t want to self-destruct.

Vale assessed the risks that the dam came with but never told any of the local residents. The residents had no idea of what do in a situation like this, basically dooming them before the dam even collapsed. The company knew of the risks but didn’t bother to warn anyone, causing many to lose their lives. Why wouldn’t they warn the locals that the dam had some risks and that something might eventually happen?

Others are wondering if the cameras might have showed what happened that made the dam collapse, but the cameras weren’t working that day. This is very suspicious because it’s too exact that the cameras stopped working on the exact day that the dam collapsed. Some believe they were disabled by the company so they could get away with foul play, but others think the collapse of the dam and things going wrong interfered with the cameras.

Another suspicion is how the alarms didn’t go off and warn everyone of what was going to happen. Since those didn’t work either, it caused people in nearby homes to have no idea of what was happening, therefore not being able to get out in time, or at least do something to prevent them from dying. Did they disable the alarm system too, or was it a freaky coincidence? Vale argued that this system wasn’t automatic and had to be triggered from the main office. Supposedly, the two men in charge of alerting the emergency center were in the mine itself and were killed before they had the chance.

What are your thoughts on the entire situation? Do you think that the company did it on purpose or was everything an accident and totally unpredictable?
