Are you writing a story but feel like your characters seem a bit flat or bland? Something that many new writers fail to incorporate into their story is a character with a goal. When writing a story it’s usually necessary for the main character to want something so that the plot can move along, which ties into their motivation. How motivated your character is will affect how they will react to certain situations- if your character is super dedicated to their cause they won’t let small issues stop them, and may even panic when they do something wrong that could interfere with what they want.

Personality is essential when creating a character because it allows the reader to gauge how said character would react to certain things. It doesn’t help if you make a character that is bland, boring, and predictable, because the story may end up feeling the same way. To spice up their personality, take into account their speech, how they communicate with others, and their relationships with those they feel strongly about. It also helps to add something unique about them that would set them apart in a crowd; this could be anything from a flashy appearance, a hidden talent, or physical difference.

After all of that has been decided and you’re still having trouble coming up with a name, look up what names were popular in the time period that book/story is taking place. If none of those names stand out to you, then take a look at some of the more unpopular names from that time and branch out from there. If you’re still struggling then try a name generator list online or think of people you know with names you like, or even a name that you personally have wanted.

Failing is what makes the story believable. If someone were to read a story about a hero who won every battle that took place in the story, it could become unrealistic to the point where it becomes boring. Adding challenges that your character would struggle to solve shows the reader more about the character’s weaknesses, and would even make the character more relatable. Another thing to think about would be on things your character wouldn’t normally do, but would do for someone else, to add layers on the character. Say someone normally hates the ocean but would go for a swim anyways to rescue a family member, and the same person despises salt but can’t resist a bag of chips; it’s these traits that make a character seem more real and less bland.

If you need help coming up with a basic idea of personality for your character, look at the people in your life and characters in other stories that you like. It’s okay to draw inspiration from someone’s work as long as you don’t downright steal it.
