Mass shootings have always been a concern; now more than ever. School shootings happen so often, that Snoops.com stated “It happens roughly 3 per week.” towards the beginning of this year. In 2015, the Gun Violence Archive released statistics for gun violence throughout the year. The final counts showed that there were 372 mass shootings and 64 school shootings amounting to about 40,105 casualties in the United States.

As of March 15, 2018, there have been 25 reported mass shootings in the this year. The reason for these violent acts is attributed to accessibility to guns, some sort of mental illness as well as a motive. Authorities say many teenagers have access to a family member’s firearm and after many different studies, it has been discovered how easy it is for a teenage student to be licensed to carry a weapon. Related issues is how a mentally ill adult can aquire a gun without much worry.

Recently, in shootings such as Parkland and Vegas, the weapon of choice has been an semi-automatic assault rifle called the AR-15. The Boston Globe has described this gun as “mass shooters’ weapon of choice”. There has been a circulating topic on the act of banning military-style assault rifles like the AR-15, but it would be difficult to take the many guns from American households. The second side of this topic is less radical; it involves setting more precautions to be licensed to carry a firearm. Nothing has been set in stone at this time.

Mental illness plays a huge part within the minds of the people who commit these crimes. When the illness and motive are mixed together, chaos ensues and innocent lives are put into danger. Of course, there are many illnesses that could exist in the perpetrators. There is no way to know what illness could lead to a mental break, but with 11 million seriously ill adults in the United States,  its important to pay attention to the signs. Contact somebody if there are signs that someone may be unwell or a risk to themselves and others

According to Psychitriary.org, signs to look for are:

  • Withdrawal
  • Drop in everyday function
  • Apathy
  • Unnecessary aggressive behavior
  • Illogical thinking
  • Nervousness
  • Unusual behavior
