An alternate solution in place of snow days has been brought to attention, Blizzard Bags. This idea is a way for students to do assignments on a snow day, which will count as a full day at school. In November, Ms. Williams, Palmer High’s Computer Technology teacher, noticed other schools were using this method, so she decided to do some research to see what it entails. Ever since Ms. Williams thought about the idea of bringing Blizzard Bags to Palmer Schools, it has been in the works. There were about four surveys that went out to get as many opinions as possible. A survey went out to get the school community’s thoughts on the idea.

During an interview with Ms. Williams, she said that “Communication is a required element; teachers are required to touch base with students several times a day, in case of questions or need for explanation. Teachers are aware that not all students have internet access, and the majority of teachers will plan out paper pencil assignments, though 30% of teachers will do both.” If students don’t do the Blizzard Bag, they will either be marked absent from a class, or all day, depending on how many assignments are missed. Students who are not able to do the assignment due to loss of internet will get several days to make it up. If the school committee meeting approves, it will pilot next winter for a year to see if it does well.
