On March 22nd, 2018, a local apartment building was set aflame. The cause of the fire was determined to be the improper disposal of smoking material from the upper floor’s outside deck.

This fire claimed the life of an elderly man who left the smoking material on a fabric recliner he used for lounging. The man called the fire department just before 2 in the morning, but the fire department arrived too late and the man was unable to make his escape. Upon arrival, the building’s top two levels had been engulfed in flames. The first floor seemed to have endured little damage but the top levels were demolished entirely.

Although there were smoke detectors in the apartment, most were without batteries or mangled in a drawer. Along with that, there were no carbon monoxide alarms within the building at all. Since the incident it has been highly encouraged that families contact their local fire department in order to obtain fire and carbon monoxide alarms for future safety protocols.

Fortunately, the other 10 residents of the apartment building including a three-month-old baby managed to make a safe escape. The street of the apartment building was closed for the rest of that day in order for police to investigate.

The fire has left the families homeless and without their personal belongings. However, sixth and seventh grade students of Palmer High started a fundraiser, which acquired over $100 to donate to the families in need.

As of right now, the victim’s name will remain anonymous until he is properly identified and family members have been notified of the death. The only released information so far is that he was a 66-year-old man.
